One of the hardest things to do in the relationship is to shift the focus from correcting our partner to what happens inside of us. We all are quick to see faults in our partner’s words or behavior and eager to offer suggestions. For example: “You never initiate things!” “You are always on your phone!” That feedback usually leads to defensive response and more disconnection, leaving both partners feeling unheard and frustrated.

The key to a more bonding and healing conversation is to connect with your own feelings and reactions first and to share those in a more vulnerable way. It requires us to look inwards, to get curious about our raw places, and to take a risk of sharing them.

Imagine that your relationship with your partner is a garden. And you and your partner are the gardeners. It is up to you what type of garden you will create. You can tend to the garden with care or forget about it, letting it take its own course. You can choose to water it regularly, enrich it with nutrients, and pull out weeds as they come up, or you can let it dry out and wither.

Being a good gardener takes patience, diligence, and commitment. Being a good partner takes the same. Just like the garden, your relationship can benefit from consistent and mindful care. Don’t expect to smell roses if you didn’t plant or took care of them.

Nourish the garden of your relationship with:
1 Small expressions of love
2 Patience and grace (e.g., next time your partner does something that trigger you, take a breath and soften your heart before reacting).
3 Appreciation of your partner’s strengths

6 Tending to the hurt places with care
