You love each other. And somewhere along the way, it got hard to reach each other.

Maybe the arguments have started to follow the same script. One of you pushes to talk it through; the other goes quiet or pulls away. Or maybe there’s no fighting at all, just a growing distance you both feel and neither of you knows how to name.

You may be carrying things into the relationship that are heavier than most couples have to hold: years of hiding parts of yourself, family who never fully came around, a world that still asks you to justify your love. Those experiences don’t stay outside the relationship. They shape how safe it feels to be vulnerable with the person closest to you.

You may find yourself thinking:
  • “Why does it feel like we’re on different teams?
  • I don’t want to be the one who always needs more.”
  • “We’ve never really talked about what our relationship is supposed to look like.”
  • “I’m scared that if I show them how much this hurts, they’ll leave.”
  • I miss how easy it used to be between us.”

We all have a deep need to feel securely connected to the person we love. When that connection is threatened, our nervous system reacts as if something vital is at risk, because it is. That’s why small moments can turn into big fights, and why silence can feel like abandonment.

For many LGBTQ+ people, the relationship with a partner is also home in a way it may not be for everyone. It can be the first place you’ve been fully seen. That makes the bond precious, and it can make disconnection feel especially frightening.

If the cycle isn’t addressed, resentment and loneliness can slowly overshadow the love that brought you together.

The good news: the cycle can change, and so can how it feels to be together.

At Touchstone Psychology, our couples therapists use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), one of the most thoroughly researched approaches to couples therapy, to help you and your partner understand what’s really happening between you and rebuild a secure, lasting bond.

EFT doesn’t treat your relationship as a communication problem to be fixed with techniques. It goes to the root: the fears and unmet needs underneath your reactions, and the pattern the two of you get caught in when those fears are triggered.

Through Emotionally Focused Therapy, we will help you:
  • See the cycle, not the enemy. Recognize the negative pattern that pulls you apart, so you can face it together instead of blaming each other.
  • Understand your triggers. Make sense of the strong reactions that show up, often connected to feeling alone, unimportant, or not enough.
  • Slow down and reach for each other. Share the softer feelings underneath the anger or the shutdown, in a way your partner can actually hear.
  • Build lasting safety. Create a relationship where honesty and vulnerability feel possible without a crisis to force them.
  • Reconnect emotionally and physically. Restore the closeness and intimacy you’ve been missing.

You shouldn’t have to spend your sessions educating your therapist about your identity, your community, or your relationship structure. You should be able to walk in and get to work.

Our therapists bring cultural humility, attunement to identity, and real familiarity with the terrain LGBTQ+ couples navigate, including:

Celebrating Diversity of Love.

We welcome and affirm couples across the full spectrum of identity and relationship:

    • Gay, lesbian, bisexual, and queer couples
    • Transgender, nonbinary, and gender-expansive partners
    • Mixed-orientation and mixed-identity relationships
    • Ethically non-monogamous and polyamorous relationships
    • Couples at every stage: newly together, premarital, long-partnered, parenting, or deciding whether to stay

There's nothing about your relationship you need to explain or apologize for here.
