FAQ

We offer a range of fees to make it more flexible and accessible for you. Our fees are in line with other New York based therapists. Reduced fees are also available for those experiencing financial difficulties and should be discussed with the therapist during the consult call.

We are not in-network with most insurance plans and are considered an Out-of-Network provider. The people who see us pay us out of pocket at the time services are rendered. Upon your request, we can provide you with a superbill that you can submit to your insurance for receiving out-of-network reimbursement. We recommend that you contact your insurance carrier to inquire about your out-of-network benefits and reimbursement rates for behavioral health services, including telehealth coverage. We make no guarantees about the level of reimbursement you may receive.

The best way to find out about coverage is to call your insurance company directly and ask about the Out-of-Network benefits:

  • Do I have out-of-network benefits for mental health services?
  • What is the deductible and has it been met?
  • What percentage of sessions are covered?
  • How many sessions per year does my health insurance cover?

We understand that at times you might need to cancel or reschedule our sessions. Your session time is reserved especially for you and so we request that you offer us a 48-hour cancellation notice to avoid fees. Therapy sessions canceled with less than 48-hour notice for non-emergency reasons will be charged the full session fee. We hold ourselves to the same standard.

Before the first appointment, we will send you a few intake forms to fill out, including consent form, explanation of confidentiality (therapy is confidential!), as well as a few questions about your reasons to seek therapy, and your current struggles. This preliminary information will help us to get started.

The first session is focused on you and your therapist getting to know each other and building safety and trust. Having a good and trusting relationships with your therapist is a crucial step in therapy success. During the first session, your therapist will ask you about your goals and learn about your current difficulties. If there are any topics that you are not ready to talk about, you will never be pushed to disclose anything beyond your readiness and comfort. You and your therapist will begin developing a plan for therapy that meets your needs.

If you are seeking couples therapy, your therapist will meet you and your partner together for the first joint session to explore reasons for seeking therapy, current relationship struggles, and hopes and goals for your relationships. Your therapist will then meet with each of you individually for one session each to obtain more background on your personal histories, cultural and family histories, mental health histories, and other relevant information and context that impact your relationship. After those individual sessions, we will come together again for a feedback session, during which we will clearly outline the goals and steps toward those goals. If we all agree, we then will continue to meet together for the duration of therapy, with occasional individual sessions if necessary.

Our main approach is Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) model. Touchstone Psychology therapists are all trained in the model, trust in its ability to make a difference, and are passionate about helping people build stronger connections and relationships. What is EFT? The founder of the model, Dr. Sue Johnson wrote: “EFT is a way of being with people that comforts, supports, heals and grows them. It is a journey that a therapist and a client – individual, couple or family – take together. A journey of discovery.”

The length of therapy varied for every person or couple. During our work together, we continuously check-in to see how you feel and that you are progressing towards your goals.

Individual therapy sessions typically last 45-50 minutes; couples therapy sessions typically last 60 minutes. Most people we see for individual and coupes therapy attend therapy weekly; some prefer sessions every other week; and some occasionally seek a second appointment in the same week when additional support is needed. We can be flexible! We will work together to determine the most optimal frequency of sessions that is right for you.

Therapists at Touchstone Psychology believe in the importance of connection and strong relationships. We are all trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy (along with other therapy models) and are passionate about helping people build stronger relationships with themselves and others. Think of us as your relationship experts. Several of the therapists on our team came to psychotherapy profession after having a different career. Their life journey and intentional choice in creating their path towards being a therapist add depth to their life experience, as well as wisdom, compassion, and understanding.

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost. Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services. You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services. You can ask your healthcare provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.
